Welcome to the English as
an Additional Language (EAL) Webpage
-
- What's in a name?
- Until this year the department with responsibility
for those children for whom English is not their
mother tongue was called the English as a Second
Language (ESL) department. In line with current
thought and practice in this area Ambrit has changed
the name to English as an Additional Language. This
title takes into account those children who may be
learning English as a third or even fourth language.
It also reinforces the idea that they are adding
English to their other languages and not replacing
them with English.
-
- Who are we?
- The teachers in the department work in close
collaboration with their mainstream colleagues to
provide support for all those children who are English
Language Learners (ELL). This group includes all those
children who are studying in English where English is
not their mother tongue. They receive support from us
according to their needs and their English
proficiency. All ELL students are assessed by us to
determine their progress.

in touch with us by email.
-
- Where are we?
- Our home is the Language Centre which is on the
lower ground floor. The centre is used as a resource
room for EAL and Italian as an Additional Language
(IAL) teachers, and a classroom for large group, small
group and individual lessons involving English and
Italian language learners.
-
- In the meantime keep in touch with your child's
EAL teacher. We will have a conference report for you
in the spring.
- Thank you for your attention.
