Dear First Grade families,

Welcome to first grade! We are so excited to begin this great school year.

On the first day of school (and thereafter) your child will make the exciting journey upstairs to their new classroom with their classmates promptly at 8:45. Parents are requested to say goodbye in the playground. If students arrive any time after 8:45, please check in with Miss Gigi who will make note of their arrival and change the attendance record to insure accuracy for school lunch and buses.

Your child will need a backpack to take homework and snacks back and forth from school. Please choose a backpack that is worn comfortably on the shoulders, and NOT one with wheels. We will not be sending things home that require rolling instead of carrying, and the wheeled backpacks reduce the space we have to share in our classrooms.

We have a break each day at around 10:00. The students may have a snack at that time. We recommend sending your child to school with a healthy snack to enjoy during break. Please do not send candy, chocolate, cakes or sweets. Student performance is improved by healthy fortifying snacks. Please be sure that it is labeled with their name so that we can avoid missing snacks.

Each student must bring one labeled reusable (not disposable) bottle that will stay in the classroom for drinking water. Please make sure that the bottle you choose has a secure lid so that we avoid spills. Each room has a fresh water dispenser for students to refill their bottles.

We invite you to donate the following supplies to be shared in the class. While these are not required supplies to bring in, they will help us to keep our classrooms well stocked for the year.
-writing pencils (not colored pencils)
-glue sticks
-wet wipes

One of the ways that we promote literacy in first grade is by inviting students to bring in a “birthday book” to celebrate their birthday in class. We do this instead of parties with food because we feel it supports the work we are doing in school, and it prevents problems with food allergies.

We are looking forward to working with you as we begin the first grade adventure together! Feel free to contact us by email if you have any questions. We will check our email in the morning before school starts, and at the end of the school day. If a problem arises during the school day, please contact the office, and they will notify us.

We look forward to meeting all of you!
Sincerely,
