MATH

Mathematics Perspective and Aims

Curriculum

After completion of the different strands of the mathematics curriculum, students should be enabled to:

Data Handling
Measurement
Number
Pattern & Function
Reasoning
Shape & Space
data handling allow us to make a summary of what we know and to make inferences about what we don't know.
to measure is to attach a number to a quantity using a chosen unit. The degree of approximation, and thus accuracy depends on the device and the measure.
numbers are used to determine or define quantities or relationships, to measure, to make comparisons, to find locations and to read codes. We use numbers to interpret information, make decisions and solve problems.

the study of mathematical patterns and functions enable us to organize and understand most observations of the world around us.

relationships, properties, facts and models can be used to verify, validate and extend thinking.

the regions, paths and boundaries of natural space can be described by shape..students need to understand the interrelations o f shapes and the effects of changes to shapes in order to interpret, understand and appreciate our two and three dimensional world.

Make block graphs by coloring boxes, squares and rectangles.

Answer questions based on the block graphs.

Represent collective data through pictorial and line graphs.
Compare and contrast.
Make and use estimates of measurement.

Develop measurement skills using standard units (centimetres, inches).

Measure temperature with Celsius and Fahrenheit degrees.

Measure capacity (litre, quart)

Measure time to the hour, half and quarter hour.

Measure weight (kilogram/pound)

Identify and solve problems involving length, capacity, weight, area, volume, time temperature as used in everyday life.
Gain a sense of number through real life experiences and the use of physical materials.
Understand the concept of place value to 10000
understand ordinal numbers to 25th.
Recognise and write numbers to 1000.
Round numbers to the nearest 10,100.
Computation:
Demonstrate an understanding of the concepts of addition and subtraction up to 3-digit
numbers.
Demonstrate an understanding of multiplication using single digits; of division using a single digit divisor.
Understand the interrelation between addition, subtraction multiplication and division.
Understand the concept of fractions.
Apply fractions to problem situations.Intro. to equivalent fractions.
Identify and describe examples of classifications
and patterning in the environment.

Count by 2' 3' 4' 5' 10' up to 100

Understand the patterns in multiplication tables.

Identify and continue simple shape and number patterns.

Draw logical conclusions about mathematics.

Use models, known facts and relationships to explain their thinking.

Develop problem solving skills to assist them on finding solutions to everyday situations.

Recognise and name spheres, cubes, cones and cylinders.

Recognise and name circles, squares, rectangles, triangles , pentagons and hexagons.

Use basic shapes to make patterns
Fold shapes to show lines of symmetry.

Determine by folding which shapes do have and do not have lines of symmetry.

Describe model,draw and classify shapes.

Compare and contrast plane and solid geometric shapes.

Understand the notion of an angle .

relate right angles to quarter turns;recognize right angles.

Determine congruent figures.

ART

Art Perspective and Aims

Art Programme

Curriculum overview for Grades 1-5

One 45 minute class per week

The first semester programme consists mainly of a variety of short term projects (1-4 weeks), roughly alternating between 2-Dimensional and 3-Dimensional media, and including drawing, painting, collage/design and sculpture. The second semester includes the above and at least one long term project (usually sculpture).
There is a natural progression from simple to more complex projects, from limited freedom and choice to greater freedom and autonomy.

The Art programme will include work with drawing, painting, sculpture and collage/design. Students will explore the possibilities of a wide variety of materials and techniques, including most of the following.

Drawing
Painting
Collage/design
Sculpture
