Welcome to 5th Grade!
September 2011

We are very excited and have great plans for this year. We are in large classrooms on the top floor (Mr. Guarnieri in 211 and Mr. Litman in 210). This year Miss Flynn is part of the grade 5 team as an assistant teacher. In October we will initiate the pilot one-on-one iPad program.

Here is information about supplies and procedures for Grade 5:

School Supplies
: All students should have
1. Backpack or book bag
2. Small lunch box for snack/lunch
3. Water bottle (a 0.5 liter plastic bottle is fine.)
4. Small Pencil case (about the size of a 0.5 liter water bottle) containing:

  • pencils and pens
  • highlighter
  • eraser
  • Pen Drive (about 2G)

Note: Grade 5 students do not need an agenda or diary book. They will be given one at the start of each Unit of Inquiry.

Food: Children should bring in a healthy snack for our morning break. Fruit, yogurt, juice, etc. are fine, but please no candy or sweets. We also ask that students do not share their snacks.

Dress: Students are expected to dress appropriately for school. Clothing should be sensitive to the variety of cultures and values represented in the school community and should not detract from the learning environment.

The guidelines for "appropriate dress" are that students:
  • Wear clothes and shoes that are practical, neat and clean.
  • Wear shoes that are appropriate for the weather; no flip-flops.
  • Wear tops and shirts that cover the shoulders,; no spaghetti straps or tank tops.
  • Wear clothes that do have tears or holes.
  • Do not wear hats including baseball caps, visors and bandanas inside the building.
  • Skirts, dresses and shorts should be no shorter than 10 centimeters above the knee.
  • Proper clothing and shoes are required for P.E. days.
  • Long hair should be tied back.

Illness: Please do not send medications to school with your child. (Contact the school nurse if your child needs medication during the school day.) If your child is not fit enough to play outside, he/she should stay home. If your child has any specific medical conditions, please inform the school nurse.

Bus: If you need to change your child's bus schedule (or if your child is going home with a different person) please contact Ms. Gigi by email or phone. Parents should also email the classroom teacher about the change.

Birthdays: Students can celebrate their birthday at school by offering a special snack to their classmates at recess (Cookies, pasticcini-small pastries, or other single serving treats are appropriate). Note: If students plan to have an out-of-school birthday party, please only hand out invitations at school if the whole class is invited.
