The Right to Food

by Kabir

Everybody in the world deserves food, but 1 billion people around the world are hungry. The Right to Food is very important because everyone should have that right. But so many people die of hunger. According to the U.N. 30,00 children die every day of hunger. The Right to Food means that every person should have access to enough food at times when it is needed, and that that food is adequate in quantity and quality.

More things than lack of food can cause world hunger. Lack of health care can also be a factor. Natural disasters such as floods and droughts are also a problem. Floods destroy farmlands. Human activities like deforestation and burning fossil fuels affect the situation too.

Eating is a right because if you can’t eat then you will die. There is enough food in the world for everyone, however this food is not distributed properly. Even rich countries like the USA have poverty and hunger. Poverty is a big factor because some people don’t have money to support their family and to buy food.

Even poor countries export to rich countries. The poorest places in the world are India, China, Latin America, and Africa. Over 40% of the world’s hungry are found in India. In some places the farmlands isn't suitable for growing crops. A lack of education is also a cause because some children grow up without learning and therefore don’t get jobs and go hungry. Economy is also important. Organizations such as the W.F.P. are desperately short of funds of funds. Governments have a moral duty to help. Rich countries repeatedly promise to help the poorer countries, but few follow through on this.

However poverty is declining. The percentage of World Hunger has fallen by a 3rd since 1960. There are solutions. Everyone can help. A single person can make a difference and every contribution counts. You can do something. If everyone brought in a bit of money, than that would be a lot. People in rich countries should be careful not to waste food that could go to other people. The food we throw away would be a feast for some other people,

On October 16th we mark World Food Day. Maybe in the future we can celebrate World Food Day instead.
