EAL Support

A great number of our students come from multi-lingual households and sometimes arrive speaking a language other than English. Therefore, they often need assistance in order to proficiently learn English as an additional language (EAL).
The specialists in the EAL department work in close collaboration with class teachers to provide support for all of those children who are English Language Learners (ELL). They receive support according to their needs and their English proficiency. All ELL students are assessed by the EAL department to determine their progress.

Mother Tongue Language Support

Ambrit is a multi-lingual community and we embrace our cultural and linguistic diversity. We nurture the variety of languages spoken and encourage families to maintain and enrich their mother tongue language(s).
To support families who would like their children to continue studying in the mother tongue, Ambrit will provide a learning space within the school, where language classes can be held as part of the after school program. Our EAL and Mother-tongue coordinator will be on hand to assist in finding qualified language instructors.
At the moment, we have groups in the following languages, but hope to expand it further next year:
>Swedish
>Russian
>German

The programme is offered:

* to families with children in Grade 1 to Grade 8
* 1x/week after school, from 3:45-4:45pm
* by suitable teachers in small groups
* at a cost according to the size of the group

Please contact Jennifer Kightley, our EAL coordinator for more information

Learning Support

Ambrit International school recognizes the potential inherent within each child. In an effort to foster the student's continued growth, Ambrit provides assistance to students with mild or moderate learning differences and students requiring academic support according to the resources available within the school. It is expected that all students will participate in all aspects of the Ambrit program. The cooperation between the Learning Support Team, class and subject teachers and parents is considered an integral part of the process.

Counseling

Under the umbrella of student services, Ambrit offers counseling services for students and families in our school community.
It is part of the Ambrit philosophy to help students achieve academic, social and emotional balance throughout their education and foster healthy life skills that will be part of their whole lives.

In EC, the counselor works primarily with teachers who request guidance in order to improve the healthy habits of the younger students.

In Primary, the counselor works directly with students offering mini workshop sessions during the school day in different grade levels. This year, conflict resolution will be the focus of workshops with grade three students under the name of '15 minutes of healthy talk.' Workshops in grade 4 on this topic are called 'hand in hand' and grade 5 students will gain awareness of bullying issues.

In the Middle School students explore how to develop, communicate and manage good social skills. Students may also be referred to the counselor by teachers or individually request to see the counselor when needed.
In addition the school counselor organizes workshops for parents in each department. The topics for these workshops have included: transitions, changes, building healthy habits within families, sibling issues, and bullying.
