Ambrit teachers, children and families all participate in HELPING HANDS projects. We work on understanding in a simple way what it means to help another. . . if a person is hungry, we can collect food for them. If there are children who may need shoes, sweaters and blankets we can find a way to raise money and then the money can be changed into those items.
We have projects that are near to home - Rome for us, like the Peter Pan Association linked to the Bambino Gesu Hospital, and also far away, like the project to help the children at the Shillong Orphange in Meghalaya, India.
For 2 years now, we have raised money with bake sales. It is wonderful to think that cakes and sweets can be changed into money which can then be transformed into shoes and blankets. Last year, the 3rd grade at Ambrit collected sweaters for all the children as well.
Near to home, we have a food collection every October to celebrate World Food Day. We ask children to bring in pasta, rice, oil, sugar and coffee for the elderly who stay in the Caritas home near Circo Massimo. During the first week of November, several 5th and 8th grade students help deliver bags and bags of food.
What project is next? A group of early childhood teachers are working very hard on an Ambrit Sweet Tooth Cook Book that will be sold at the Christmas Bazaar.
