Library Curriculum

In the library, Ambrit students are taught locational, alphabetical, numerical, and research skills. They learn how the library is organised and how to use the different types of materials. Nursery to Grade 1 children have 30 minutes of library time per week, Primary have 45 minutes, and Middle School students have one hour.

Learning Standards by grade level

Nursery and Kindergarten
  • Enjoy picture books individually or in small groups.
  • Learn how to handle books correctly.
  • Learn how to replace books neatly in book boxes.
  • Listen to and participate in stories as a class group.
Prep
  • Select library books to take home from the the picture book section.
  • Understand circulation routines.
  • Become familiar with the terms; author, title and illustrator.
  • Understand shelving of picture books by genre and author.
  • Learn library behaviour and care of books.
Grade One
  • Understand shelving of picture books by genre and author.
  • Learn differences between fiction and non-fiction books.
  • Learn to locate easy-reading fiction books.
  • Study selected authors and illustrators.
Grade Two
  • Understand how non-fiction books are sorted and shelved by subject.
  • Use their personal shelf markers.
  • Find non-fiction books using Subject Index catalogues.
  • Locate easy fiction chapter books.
  • Choose fiction books by reading blurb and first page.
  • Use the '5 finger test' to evaluate the reading level of the book.
  • Study selected authors and series of fiction books.
Grade Three
  • Learn that fiction books are arranged alphabetically by the author's last name.
  • Use library computer programme to find books by author or title.
  • Check on availability of books using library computer programme.
  • Are familiar with the terms; genre, series, blurb.
  • Understand main Dewey classes and sub-divisions for non-fiction books.
Grade Four
  • Review use of fiction section, discuss authors, series and genre.
  • Discuss 'parts of a book' and fiction and non-fiction.
  • Learn to use Contents and Index in non-fiction books.
  • Understand how to use keywords.
  • Learn a variety of research skills related to the non-fiction and reference sections.
Grades Five and Six
  • Use library resources to research projects by locating, selecting and presenting work to class.
  • Are familiar with all aspects of library use.
  • Explore different fiction authors and genre
  • Present book talks and participate in literature discussions.
Grades Seven and Eight
  • Read at least two fiction books from the library each month.
  • Participate in literature discussions.
  • Present book talks which are evaluated for clarity, interest and preparation.
  • Learning and utilising reading strategies.
  • Use library resources for class project research with supervision by librarian or teachers.
